Me and you. At parties.

Growing up, a lot of people assumed I was not a very social person, due to my disconnect when there are large groups of people present. Well, there’s actually a very good reason for that and it has very little to do with me not being sociable. I imagine that doesn’t make a lot of sense to you, though.

Person I know Day: Batman. I mean Zeb.

I thought today that I’d perform my next, much belated ‘Person I know Day’ entry. And who better to ridicule talk about than my best friend, Zebediah?

The way Zeb and I first met was… At a proverbial gunpoint. We were both attending Drama courses in High-School (As if High-School needed any more drama.) and when our first group assignment came up we were the two pathetic losers with no partner after everyone else had been paired up. So the teacher let us know that we were partners. What the project was is now lost to my memory, though I think it had to do with clowns.

Me and You.

For a long time, there’s been no good name for the so called ‘normal’ people in the world. Especially considering how nebulous the idea of normal really is. It’s a crapshoot at best.  However, a very wise man in the Aspergers community, John Elder Robison, has addressed this in his most recent book.

The Wife

Hello everyone! My name is Lyzz, Ian’s wife. I’m going to start contributing to his blog to give a different perspective on living with a husband with Asperger Syndrome. I am going to focus this first post on some books that were helpful to me when I was learning about Asperger Syndrome.

The first resource that was really helpful in learning about Asperger Syndrome is a fictional book by Jodi Picoult called House Rules. The book features a teenager with Asperger Syndrome accused of a murder. As with many Jodi Picoult books, it examines a topic from many angles – in this case, the interface of Asperger Syndrome and the legal system. While Ian’s Asperger Syndrome presents differently than the main character in House Rules, many of the defining characteristics are the same in both.

There’s something about hot dogs.

Hot dogs, an American creation, are widely considered to be a particularly virulent case of herpes on the global family of sausages. Kind of our bastardized version of a Frankfurter.

Ever wonder where they came from? If not, it’s an unusual story. Read the rest of this entry

Person I Know Day; Thomas

And so it begins, with my first victim Thomas, alias ‘Tommy the Troll’ for his habit of lurking under overpass of IMDB and leaping out at passers by and giving them a dissertation on why Boondock Saints was such a great movie. Sure this brands him as a bit unstable and of unusual tastes, but to each his own. However it’ll be a cold day in hell before he cons me into watching the sequel to that masterpiece of crap. Manta Rays, Paternity Wards, Cuban Cigars.

My trip has introduced me to a number of new experiences from new aquatic life to magnolia ice cream. Some of these activities have been mundane such as an afternoon nap Hawaiian style and some far more exhilarating such as snorkeling with giant fish. Since I’ve been slacking on my planned Monday, Wednsday Friday update schedule, I”ll give my current scant audience an extended post to whet their appetites for my misadventures.

Now bear in mind, having Aspergers means I’m an incredibly long winded man, so i’ll just advise you you’ll be here more than three minutes if you continue past this point and choose to read the rest of this article. More like four, or even five. Or if your reading skills are limited, like my poor mentally challenged nephew Kevin, maybe even six or seven. Read the rest of this entry

Greetings, from the tropical place.

I’m currently on vacation in Hawaii, so… Aloha is what I’m supposed to say, perhaps? So… Aloha. Haven’t been here long enough to get an accurate feel for it, but I suspect come Wednesday I’ll have a better idea of the place.

Hello, and welcome!

Hey there, welcome to Aspergersoup. No, this isn’t a cooking blog. Well, not exclusively, and certainly not primarily. This is kind of a thrice weekly snapshot of the life of a man in the midst of an ongoing bout of self discovery and growth.
